This week marks a special two-part series of Construction Record podcast episodes tied into our national feature series Cracks in the Foundation: Mental Health, Substance Use and Construction.

In this first episode, Journal of Commerce staff writer Russell Hixson looks at the journeys of three different individuals as they entered the construction industry while struggling with substance use. Ironworker and project supervisor Rob Trymbulak, counsellor Julian Toy and HeroWork Victoria executive director Trevor Botkin each turned to substance use for different reasons but all eventually hit the point where they knew they had to change their lives if they wanted to survive.

Hixson also spoke to Vancouver Island Construction Association president Rory Kumala for an industry perspective on the “other pandemic” of substance use and also discussed struggles with mental health and what associations and other stakeholders can do to help.

You can listen to The Construction Record and TCR Express on the Daily Commercial News and Journal of Commerce websites as well as on Apple PodcastsSpotify and Amazon Music’s podcast section and we recommend also listening to our recent interview with BCCSA president Mike McKenna and Work To Wellness founder Diana Vissers about the Re-Mind mental health resource site here. Thanks for listening and we’ll see you next week.
